GOP Rep. Mia Love on ‘Shithole’ Controversy: “We Can Not Let This Derail Us” From Fixing DACA

Republican Rep. Mia Love of Utah is the first Haitian-American elected to Congress. She told CNN’s Jake Tapper Sunday morning that President Trump is planning to “reach out” to her to apologize for his much-reported comment about immigrants from third world countries. Trump allegedly asked: “Why do we need so many Haitians?”

“I can’t defend the indefensible,” the first-term member of Congress said about the president’s words. “There are countries that do struggle out there — but their people are good people. They are part of us.”

“My parents came from Haiti,” she said. “When they pledged their allegiance to the flag and become U.S. citizens, they meant every word of it.”

“There is a little bit of explaining to do,” Love said about Trump’s comments. “It was difficult to hear, particularly because my parents were such big supporters of the president.”

“I hope that we are actually going to work on fixing DACA. We can not let this derail us. The worst thing that can happen right now is for there not to be a fix for DACA at all. There are people that are depending on us. Not just Americans on border security, but families that are in limbo, who need something a president can’t give or take away from them. We have to find a way to fix the immigration issue, fix the DACA issue, and we can’t let this derail us.”

“One of the things we need to do I get people like me in the room,” she added. “There are so many people that I want to just make sure that I don’t know if those comments would have been made if I was actually in the room. There are people who really care about this issue: Will Hurd, Carlos Curbelo, people on both sides of the aisle who should have been in that room talking about DACA.”

“We have to make sure we have the right people in the room,” she repeated.

“I still think he should apologize,” she said. “There are people who are looking for an apology, and I think that would show real leadership.”

“The worst thing that can happen is not getting something done on immigration and letting this slide, and leaving these families in limbo. We have to do our job. We’re elected to go to Washington to get things done… I will be disappointed if we get nothing done.” …read more
