Vice President Mike Pence and hundreds of other Trump administration officials will not receive a pay raise as the partial government shutdown enters its third week.
The scheduled increases were the result of lawmakers’ failure to pass a slate of government funding bills by Dec. 21, triggering a lapse in an existing, annually renewed pay freeze that is set to expire Saturday.
In a Friday memorandum from the Office of Personnel Management, Acting Director Margaret Weichert wrote that “it would be prudent for agencies to continue to pay these senior political officials at the frozen rate until appropriations legislation is enacted that would clarify the status of the freeze.”
President Donald Trump said in a news conference Friday that he “might consider” asking the administration officials to refuse the raise. Pence nodded when asked if he would decline the extra taxpayer dollars.
The details of the raises were first reported Friday by The Washington Post.
